What is Released Time Education?
Released Time Education is a program of weekly Bible classes for public school students. The Released Time Christian Education program dates back to 1914 and has been functioning in California since 1944. Although Released Time is a national program, each RT program operates under their own guidelines and the regulations of their particular state and school district. Azusa Released Time Christian Education has been in existence since 1957.
The California Education Code #46014 allows for parents to request that their child be released for religious training during the school day, one hour per week. Each school board must grant permission for the program and Bible classes must he held off school property without public school funding or endorsement. For a student to participate, their parent or guardian must fill out a registration form giving written permission. Azusa Released Time Christian Education Association (ARTCEA) provides a Bible-based curriculum, teacher training, and meeting places for 4th, 5th and 6th graders enrolled in Azusa Unified School District from October through May.
